Volunteer Items.
Members of the Manchester Rifles arc reminded of the parade to-night. Lord Onslow has written to a friend in Christchurch as follows:— "I have now heard from the War Office, iirxeply to my enquiries, to the effect thai Her Majesty's approval of the extension of the decoration of volunteer officers to volunteer officers in the colonies has been obtained, but that the warrants have to receive the approval first of the India Office and the Colonial Government. I am assured that as soon as that has been done, notification will be conveyed to Ministers in New Zealand. A meeting of the Shooting Committee of the Manchester Rifles was held at Mrs Oliver's hotel last evening. Present — Lieut Bray (in the chair), Lieut Burlace, Sergts Saywell and Aitken.Vols Wilson and Card (secretary). The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Proposed bv Sergt Aitkcn, seconded by Sergt Saywell, That Vol Parker be requested to erect the canvas targets, provided that the grant asked for is allowed, and that Mr Lethbridge is agreeable. — Carried. Proposed by Sergt Saywell, seconded by Sergt Aitken, That four competitions be fired for the ladies' bracelet, three to count, and the one making the highest aggregate in the three out of four competitions be the winner ; that the ranges be 200, 300, and 500 yards, seven shots at each range ; also, that the handicaps may be altered after each competition at the discretion of the handicapper. — Carried. Proposed by Lieut Bray, seconded by Lieut Burlace, That in all future competitions for the different classes (except the present competition in Class C) there must be at least three competitors shoot on the day appointed or the competition shall not count, and that this resolution be read at the next parade. — Carried. The customary vote to the chairman terminated the meeting. Competitions were held at the butts yesterday morning. C class competition was won by Vol Card with 65, 81 at 200 and 84 at 300, Vol Richards, the only other competitor, making 68, 37 at 200 and 26 at 300. Both the above have now got three wins each for fhei' second prize in their class.- Vol Parkes, being the only one firing in B class, made 6?, 26 at 200. 23 at 300, and 18 at 500. The A class had some good practice with the Martini- Henri during the afternoon.
