The House of Lords in Danger.
SPLIT IN THE UNIONIST PARTY. [Per Press Association.] London, February 16. The House of Commons insists on provision being retained in the Bill for the franchise for ratepayers who have compounded for their rates. The majorities in the Lower House in support of tbe Government varied from 110 to 09. During the debate in the House of Commons on the action of the House of Lords regarding the Parish Councils Bill, Mr Chamberlain asked the Tory Part}' not to support the reactionary policy of the other House. Mr Balfour said ho did uot agree witb the view thus expressed by the member for Birmingham. A meeting of Liberal Unionists, the Duke of Devonshire presiding, condemned the attidude of the House of Lords, and declined to follow Lord Salisbury except on tbo Home Rule question. February 17. The adhesion of the House of Lords to two important amendments in the Scottish Fisheries Bill is likely to lead to the measure being abandoned.
