An Extracrdinary Affair.
(PEE PRESS ASSOCIATION). Wellington, February 15. A deputation, representing the Marine Engineers in Port, waited on Mr Cadman, Minister of Justice, in regard to tbe case of Wm. Stewart, second engineer of the Waikato, wbo on Monday was sentenced to a month's imprisonment for alleged neglect of duty in allowiug the refrigerating engines to run slow. The deputation asked the Minister to enquire into the case with the view of obtaining redress Tor Stewart. They stated tho evidence (as reported iv the papers) was absolutely incorrect, and they conld produce proof that tho charges against Stewart were groundless. The fact that Stewart was arrested, taken from tbe vessel, tried and imprisoned before anyone on board, exepeting the chief engineer, knew anything about it. Mr Cadman advised the deputation to put their case in writing, and he would obtain the Resident Magistrate's notes of the case, and look through them. * He promised to communicate his reply before the Waikato left New Zealand waters.
