N api kb, February 13 At the Pupreme Court to day Alexander McCutcheon, who had already pleaded j guilty to forging three promissory noteswas , convicted of attempting to extort money | from Dr Moore. Prisoner's wife was put under chloroform by the doctor for a slight opeartion, no oae else being in the room. Prisoner subsequently wrote, accusing Dr. Moore of criminally assaulting her when under the drug, and claiming £250 ; in default, threatening prosecution. Sentence was deferred. Napier, This Day. In the Supreme Court, Alex. McCutcheou, for sending a threatening letter to Dr Moore, was sentenced to five year's penal servitude, and the same period in each of three charges of forgery, the sentence to run concurrently. Rome lime ago the Canterbury Progressive Liberals Association wrote to the Premier, suggesting that several public works shortly to be undertaken in Canterbury, should be carried out under the co-operative principle, and that in cases where thie was impracticable, tbe tenderers should be required to state the rate of wages they intend to pay. The Premier has replied that insttuciions have been issued that all work should be done as far as possible under the co-oper-ative principle-, and that it is a condition in all contracts made by the Department thut the contractor must pay the current rate of wages ruling in the district, and observe eight hours as a working day. Auckland, February is A well known bookmaker, Tobias Tobms, was charged with leaving his wife without adequate means of support, also with a-B'iult. The charge of assault was dismissed, but he was ordered|to pay 10s a week to his wife. He pleaded in ability to pay, and said the totahsator had killed his business. Herbert • hester, has been arrested on a charge of issuing a valueless cheque for £10 on the Colonial Bank to Lindsay Cook, of the Albert Hotel. He was remanded for a week.
