Heavy Mortality Among Sheep.

j_P£B PEESS ASSOCIATION,! Dunedin, February 7. There lms been an exceptionally heavy mortality among sheep during the past year, especially in Central Otago. On one of the best known stations of :J 1,000 sheep, only 12,000 could be mustered for shearing. On another run the mortality was about 33 per cent. Holders of small grazing runs have suffered severely. One applicant to the Land Board asked to be allowed to surrender. He stated that he put 1000 sheep on the run in March last, but only mustered 103 lambs for cutting and tailing, and he did not expect more than 30 sheep to shear. Mr Clark said it was unfortunate, but the board had not the power to reduce the rent temporarily in a bad year. Mr Duncan, M.H.R., agreed and said some scheme would have to be adopted to meet cases con-* tinually coming before the Board.
