The Waitemata Election Petition.

(PEB PBESS ASSOCIATION) Auckland, February 5. The hearing of the petition of Jackson-Palmer to unseat Richard Monk, M.H.R-, for Waitemata, on the ground of alleged corrupt practices, was taken at the Supreme Court to-day before Chief Justice Prendergast and Judge Connolly. Mrs Elizabeth Clements deposed to having voted as Henderson, and that young Monk gave her 4s 9d, and drink and cigars. Her husband gave corrobora- i tive evidence, also Marian Drummoud, ; who also received drink and cigars. Marian Drummond got 2s to treat the men in the hotel bar. Mrs Clements, in cross-examination, admitted she had been imprisoned 99 times, and Maria Drummond 57 times for various offences. Gteo. Ryan, employed at Henderson's hotel, deposed to receiving 2s to treat some gum-diggers. Hiram Lyons, a gumdigger, deposed to being treated by young Monk, who also shouted for the people in the hotel. The case was adjourned till to-morrow. This Day. The Waitemata petition case was continued to-day. Elizabeth Kavanagh deposed she was in the bar of the hotel the whole day of the election, and Monk. Junr., paid for drinks for Hyratn Lyons, Ivas Donnelly, Eliza Clements, Maria Drummond and Sam Johnston several times. Ryan showed her 2s which he said young Monk gave him. Clements showed her half-a-crown which she said young Monk gave her.
