SERIOUS FIRES IN VICTORIA. | Per Press Association.] Melbourne, February 5. At a large meeting, attended by many of the leading public and commercial men of Melbourne, a voluntary tribunal of arbitration was inaugurated, for the purpose of settling disputes between merchants and business men without entailing loss of time and money. This step is necessitated by the present legal methods. Dr Neill, coroner, writing to the press, says that in ninety per cent, of five hundred infant corpses he has examined, death was due to wilful suffocation, and lie estimates that there are fourteen hundred women living in Melbourne who have cheated the hangman. This Day. Hot weather has been experienced in the country and serious grass fires are reported in the Arraxat district, and it is believed the ignition was caused by phosphorised wheat. The Ministry intend to make the next session an entirely financial one, and they will probably ask for supplies for the year, and will hold a second session in July or August. It is generally believed Sir E. C. N. Braddon, Leader of the Opposition, will move a vote of want of confidence in the Government in the address-in-roply.
