Conference of School Inspectors.
— + (PEK PKESB ASSOCIATION.} Wellington, This Day, The conference of School Inspectors opened to-day. The Rev. W. J. Habeus, Inspector-General, presiding. In his opening address, the Chairman, on behalf of the Minister of Education, thanked those present for responding to the invitation. The main purpose of the meeting was to secure greaty informity in regard to the valuation of work in the schools, and to the interpretasion of various details of the standard regulations. Referring to the subjects to be discussed Mr Habens alluded to a proposal to bring 1 nspectors into direct relation with the iiducatiou department, and to effect this he thought would require an amendment of the Educatson Act, but that was no reason why a. full discussion should be avoided. As to technical education he was oi opinion the most important service a primary school could render was to give instruction in the primary knowledge of elementary science and ground all pupils in elementary drawing and especially geometrical drawing. He had the strongest possible sympathy with the proposal for a considerable increase in the nuinber of reading books.
