The Brazilian War
[per press association.] Rio DE JanirKo, January 29, ; Five Torpedo boats, purchased by the Brazilian Government in Germany, have arrived at Pernambuco. ■ Negotiations for the cessation of hostilities between Peinto, American Ad--1 miral, and Admiral Gama, commanding the insurgents, have failed, and fighting r has been resumed. • Two of the rebel warships, ignoring signals, began a cannonade on two American snips. January 80. \ In endeavouring to mediate between ' the belligerents, the Admiral of the ' American squadron declined to treat with Admiral De Gama unless he became reconciled with President Piexoto, but the rebel leader refused to listen to ' this proposition. On the other hand Peixoto declined to receive the American Admiral, and the latter looks upon this refusal as an insult to the American navy. When the rebel warships began a cannonade on two of the American ships, the vessels of the American squadron cleared for action, whereupon firing ceased. The traders were escorted to berths by the warships, and the incident passed off without bloodshed. London, January 30. ! The commanders of the foreign warships at Rio Janiero report the insurgents have complete control of the harbour and are asking their respective Governments if they will use force to protect the mercantile shipping.
