The Feikling Borough Council will meet to-morrow night. Captain Edwin wired to-day : " Same indications as yesterday." There will be Mass in St. Bridget's Church next Sunday morning at 8 o'clock. The Hon Mr Seddou is to be invited to pay Shannon a visit while he is on his trip up the coast to Foxtou. Mr Wollerman, of Palmerston North, is about to pay a visit to Europe. We hope he Avill have a pleasant trip and a good time, The Manawatu Farmer reports that residents on the Mill road, Otaki, say that a ghost, in the shape of a skeleton, walks about there at night. An advertiser wants to lease or purchase a large garden, with small cottage situated either hi Feilding, Makino or Halcombe. The Eiffel Tower was constructed without the sacrifice of a single life, but close on thirty persons have committed suicide from it. Mr Fred Dawsou is now in Feilding making arrangements for the Payne Family who will appear in the Assembly Rooms on Wednesday, February 7th. The telephone to Makino will be completed shortly. Mr J. P. Cowie, who has been interesting himself in the matter, is to be congratulated on the near success of his efforts. We are informed by Mr G. J. Scott, that the District Court sittings at Palmers ton North, have been adjourned until the 15th of February owing to the fact of the District Judge being unable to conclude the work he is engaged in at Waitotara. Arthur C. Foster, Pernberton, writes in answer to puzzle No. 265 in Saturday's supplement : — " Bravo, Bravo," the King cried out, " All honour to those who try. The spider up there defied despair, Heconquered, and why shouldn't I?" We understand that a site of five acres is to be laid off for the Education Board on the river bank O2)posite the Pohaugina township for a school. It would be interesting to know why the school is not to be built in the township itself. The penny-in-the-slot machines, it is declared, were used in Egyptian temples more thau 2000 years ago. By placing a piece of money in the slot, the worshippers received some consecrated water through a valve. The little trouble down at Levin with the natives reminded a Highland Scotchman of the manner in which the clansmen were robbed of their lands by the chiefs in " the good old days." The Feildiug Church of England Sunday School annual picnic is being held to-day on Mr Retemeyer's property, Kimboltou road. About thirty scholars, in charge of their teachers, came from Halcombe by the morning train to attend the picnic. Wellington Fairplay calls upon the Minister of Justice to enquire why the Christchurch Official Assignee excluded Press representatives from a meeting of creditors in the "great" Harper bankruptcy. A very proper call, too. There must not be one law for the big bankrupt and another for the little one. Iv the course of a hand to hand fight before the second relief of Lucknow during the Indian Mutiny, a soldier named "Quaker Wallace," (uo doubt so nicknamed for his_ peacable qualities) of the famous Ninety-third Highlanders, killed with his bayonet twenty of the rebel I Sepoys. He hardly got a scratch. There should be a crowded house to greet the second performance of the American Novelty Company, in the Assembly Rooms to-night, when an entirely new, and equally laughable, programme will be gone through. The company appear iv Martou to-morrow and Friday nights. To everyone who can enjoy a downight hearty laugh we would say " go to-nigt." Mr E. E. lugpeu furnishes the H.B. Herald with the following result of a trial planting of some of the seed potatoes distributed by the Government for experimental purposes last year : — " Received lib of Sutton's Abundance seed potatoes ; planted them on September 26th, 1B93 ; first flowering, November 25th; date of digging, January 20th, 1#94 ; weight of crop, 281 b exactly.
The new portion of Mr McNair's boarding house at Birmingham is now ready for the occupancy of visitors to the township. The additions made are large and very much wanted for the demands of the district. The bedrooms are airy and scrupulously clean, while the table is everything that could be desired. Those of the travelling public desiring quietness together with every home comfort, could not do better than patronise Mr McNair. The latest reports from Coolgardie state that the town in practically deserted, everybody having left for Whitefeather, Siberia, and Ninetymile. There is said to be any quantity of water at Whitefeather. At the 1.0'.U. claim, 15 miles from Whitefeather, they have dollied out lOOOoz of gold in six weeks from a rich leader. It is no wonder that American girls are irresistible if the following is a fair specimen of their readiness in retort, remarks the Globe. An eminent personage, while conversing with a fair New Yorker, ventured to express his energetic disapproval of the practice so universally adopted by ladies of wearing watches on their wrists. " Well," she returned, " I'm sure you have no objection to seeing clocks on our ankles." Mr M. Belfit, saddler and harness - maker, of Manchester street, draws attention to his business in our advertising columns to-day. Mr Belfit is well known in Feilding and the surrounding district as a capable workman, and repairs entrusted to him will be executed with despatch. All kinds of harness are made on the premises, to order, and Mr Belfit has also a good stock to select from. A line of stock-saddles are now on view in his shop, which are really good and should attract a ready sale. In our advertising columns to-day will be found a replace advertisement from , Messrs Kirkcaldie and Stains, manufacturers and importers, of Wellington, announcing that their unreserved summer sale will close of February the 10th. Special reductions are to be made in all 1 departments throughout the establishment, and visitors to the Empire city ! , should not fail to give this favourite house a call, and possess themselves of some of the many bargains which are now being offered them. A wix'e from Dunedin states that Mr ' Bruce, formerly M.H.R. for this district, was very much impressed by the heartiness of his reception in Otago. On leav- ■ ing for the North he was conveyed to the ■ railway station by delegations of the [ Burns, Gaelic, and Caledonian Societies, . who thanked him heartily for coming such a distance to do honor to their ' national poet, and assuring him he would ' be held in the kindest remembrance of ' all classes of Scotchmen. He had pres- » sing requests to speak at Palmerston - South, Oainaru, and Timaru, but as his ■ t presence is required afc home lie reluct- , antly declined. He hopes to visit Otago ', later in the year, and if the country people desire to hear him he would be ' most happy to address them then. A meeting of the Red Star Football ' Club was held in Mr F. Bray's on Monday evening, when medals were presented to Messrs R. Parr and W. Smith, for good play in matches during the season of 1693. Mr Geo. Foster [ occupied the chair and presented the medals which are very handsome. The medal won by Mr R. Parr was a present 1 to the club from Mr R. S. Fowler, for the best back player, aud that Von by > Mr Smith, for the best forward player > iv the team, was given by Messrs Bramwell Bros. After the presentation an adjournment was made to the > Denbigh Hotel, where a social re-union was held. Several songs were given and a very pleasant evening spent. The \ medals were obtained through Mr James Scott, watchmaker aud jeweller, and on each is engraved the name of the recipient.
