Grant, of Palmerston, protesting against the detention of his cheque, and pointing out the inconvenience that might result through such action. An explanation of the error that appeared in his quarterly returns was also given. He asked the Board on behalf of the teachers to see that the custom of pajment as formerly allowed by the Board be continued wifhout exception. The Secretary's official reply was also read, stating that the return in question was not received till the 28th December, and that when it came to hand it contained two glaring errors, which, although not vital, clearly showed that the return had not been read over. The Secretary further stated that he was placed in the peculiar position of having to admit the relaxation of one of the Board's rules without due sanction. This had been done at great personal inconvenience in order to afford a particular advantage to the teachers. — On the motion of Mr Baker it was resolved that a reply be sent to Mr Grant calling his attention to sections 9 and 68 of the Board's regulations, concerning the payment of salaries, and also to the circular issued by the Board on December 6th last Waituna West A letter was read enclosing the proposed boundaries of the Waituna West School district. — Referred to Messrs Sanson and Fry to report on. Pohangina Township. —Mr Lucas wrote, pointing out the necessity for removing the school to the township, and asking whether, if the townspeople erected a town hall, the Board would be prepared to use it as a schoolhouse on payment of a small rent until such time as they could erect a proper school. Another letter was received from the settlers in the vicinity of the present school, two miles from the township, objecting to the proposed removal, and asking the Board to take no action in the matter. — Mr Fry reported that he had attended a meeting of the settlers of Pohangina, and was surprised at the improvement that had taken place in the township. There was some 40 children to be provided for. He (Mr Fry) was of opinion that, whether they did so at once or not, they would ultimately have to remove the school. The expense of removal would mean about A'loo, and he thought they should go oil as at present until the Board could afford the necessary funds, as in his opinion it would not be right to rent the Hall and run two schools. —Mr Sanson considered that the circumstances of such a district warranted the running of two schools temporarily.— After considerable discussion it was resolved, on the motion of Mr Fry, that the Board has not funds at present to erect a school or to remove the present school and buildings to the township, but that the Board will consider the matter when in funds.
