The Feilding Star. Published Daily. SATURDAY, JAN.27,1894. THE FIRE BRIDGE .
We are glad to observe that the members of the Feilding Fire Brigade are again awakening into active life. It will be seen from our report of the proceedings of a meeting held at the engine room last night, that resolutions wore passed to push on the sale of the art union tickets in order to put the Brigade in funds, also that " wet " practice is to be commenced on Friday next. We hope this will be continued until the Brigade regains ita old efficiency. Unless the members do this it will be worse than useless sending a team to be present at the Demonstration at Napier. In this connection we may be permitted to remark that generally for some weeks or months before there is a prospect of a pleasurable outing such ac each ot these gatherings affords, the attendance of members at practice is pood, while their efforts to excel in the performance of their several duties as firemen are most creditable ; but " after the opera is over" the interest appears to have been lost, and practice is almost, if not entirely, neglected. We would like to suggest that the Brigade might, with advantage, extend the term for which their officers are appointed. One year is far too short a time for the officers and men to become thoroughly accustomed to each other in their relative positions — one to command the others to obey. We have observed that as 60an as a member, who as a rule is the best man in the Brigade, has served his term in command and his successor has been appointed, he retires on his honors. This is not as it should be, and by the adoption of the plan we propose the services of every experienced and capable member would be preserved to the Brigade, and thus increase their efficiency, as a whole, tenfold. THE LONGBURN FREEZING COMPANY. • ♦ ■ It is with feelings of considerable gratification we learn that the Longburn Freezing and Slaughtering Company continue to receive offers of sound support, not only from local farmers, but from quite unexpected quarters, showing, as our contemporary the Manawatu Times remarks, that the Betters evidently appreciate the enterprise of the company in providing them with the means of dealing directly with the London market. At present, tbere can be no question that the greater the patronage the owners of stock afford the company, the greater their own ultimate profit, both direct and indirect.
