Stock Markets.
Messrs Abraham and Williams report as follows : — On Tuesdaj', 23rd inst., at Pahiatua we had again to face a dull market. We sold a very nice lot of lambs for 6s, and 2-tooth wethers for 8s 3d. Cattle were dull of sale : Fat heifers, light weights, made £4 ; springing cows, .£6 ; calves, 24s 6d. At Colyton on Tuesday cattle were in limited numbers. The demand was limited also. Sheep mustered freely, the bulk being second rate quality, and bidding dull throughout. Vendors ultimately accepted lower rates and almost the lot changed hands. Yearling steers, £2 10s ; weaners, 22s 6d ; 18-month heifers, £3 ; lambs in wool, 4s 9d to 5s ; 2-tooth wethers, 7s 9d ; forward ewes, 5s to 6s 2d ; fat ewes, 7s ; ewes and lambs, all counted, 3s lOd ; culls, Is 9d ; shorn lambs, good quality, 4s lid. At Palmerston yesterday cattle were fairly numerous. Values on all classes receded somewhat, consequently a good deal was passed in. Afterwards a fair , proportion found purchasers. The bulk of the sheep entered were 2-tooths, the greater portion being from second rate quality to inferior. First quality stuff commands a ready sale, other sorts somewhat difficult to quit. A dulness was apparent to the casual onlooker, but all the sheep were quitted at rates in keeping with the export value of fat stock, an indication we take it, of a healthy sign of trade. Forward steers, £4 13s ; fat heifers, £4 10s 6d ; springing heifers, £4 3s to £6 7s ; weaners, 34s ; yearling steers, £2 6s ; 2 to 2s-year steers, £3 7s ; 18-month steers, £2 13s ; 2-tooth wethers, 8s to 8s 6d ; others, 7s 4d to 7s lOd ; forward wethers, 8s 9d to 9s ; 2-tooth ewes, 8s 9d ; others, 7s 7d ; culls, 2s 6d. Our horse sale on Saturday was composed of some very useful lots of young stock from Messrs Keiller Bros., J. G. Wilson and Robert Stevens ; the greater portion of the entry was fit for breaking and turning to use, and as this was well known there was consequently a large attendance. Bidding was at times sluggish and generally irregular, and the prices t realized were barely equal to those of the corresponding sale last year. Messrs Keiller's best unbroken colts and fillies made from £10 to £15 10s ; others, £6 to £9 10s ; a draught, £13, and buggy mare, £12 15s. The aged stallion Matai, £10 10s. Mr Wilson's ranged from £3 10s to £8 ss, and Mr Stevens' from £2 5s to £6 ss. Mr Matthew Henry reports : — Cattle — Two-year steers, £3 18s ; yearling to 15-month heifers, .1*2 15s ; weaners, 31s ; cows in calf, £4. Sheep — 2-th. wethers, 6s lOd to 8s 9d ; forward ewes, 6s 8d to 7s ; shorn medium lambs, 4s 6d.
