Public Meeting at Fohangina.

Mr Fry replied to the invitation from Pohangina by attending the meeting of householders held in the Road Board offices on Saturday last, to consider the question of building a school in the township. Mr G. It. Lueas was voted to the chair and read a letter from the Wanganui Education Board, acknowledging receipt of a letter containing the* request of the residents in the township that a school be erected there, and which, in reply, said that the Board could not accede to the request at present. The Chairman pointed out that at the present moment there were thirty seven children of school age in and close around the town, and another family, with three of school age, is expected to be resident very shortly. This will make up a total of forty, not including any who lived on the Ashurst side of Mr A. Goldfinch's. Mr Fry said that at present the Board was not in a position to build any school, it being well known throughout the district that their building fund was at a very low ebb. The application forwarded to the; Board by the Pohangina residents for a school did not reach Wanganui in time for the Board's last meeting. He would, therefore, advise this meeting to send in a fresh one, in time for the next sitting on the 29th instant. Having attended this afternoon, he would then be able to speak on the sbbject with greater certainty, and was, therefore, glad he had met them. Mr Lucas said that the Pohangina residents contemplated erecting a public hall at an early date, and they would suggest to the Board (as it is short of building funds) that the hall should be rented as a school until a more suitable building could be put up. Mr Fry replied that he did not think the Board would entertain the proposal, but if the offer was put in writing, he could explain the case to the Board. Mr Whibley proposed a vote o£ thanks to Mr Fry, for his attendance, and Mr Fry having proposed a vote of thanks fo the Chairman, the meeting then dispersed.
