Concert at Beaconsfield.
Last evening a concert was held in the Beaconsfield school-house for the purpose of raising funds to liquidate the cost of the prize books for children attending the school. ' The attendance was very large, the building being packed to the doors ; it certainly exceeded the expectations of the promoters. The programme was lengthy, and was gone through without a hitch, affording a very pleasant evening's amusement, the farce " Area Belle " being particularly good. The first item was a pianoforte solo by Mrs McAlley (of Marton), who also played most of the accompaniments. The trio " Watching for Pa " by the Misses Florrie and May Rutherford and Miss Frederick, was very nicely sang. Miss Rutherford played the accompaniment for this item. Mr Cornish sang " The King's Own." " Convent Bells," a duet by Miss Rutherford and Miss Minnie Rutherford was very good and was deservedly applauded. Mr Letford gave a step dance, Mr R. Stewart accompanying on the violin. The recitation " Do the Right" by Master John Cunningham, was encored and he repeated a verse. Miss Grice sang " Remember or Forget " and Mr Letford was encored for his rendition of the song " The Wanderer." A Maori song by Masters John, Willie, Major, Addie, and Walter Cunningham, five little boys of about the same size, caused heaps of amusement and they responded to an encore by going through a part of it again, The dialo: gue " Mr Rhymer tries to read to his wife," by Miss Phyn and Mr N". Grice was very funny, being one of the best items of the evening. Mfs McAlley gave "The song that reached jnj heart " very nicely, and another dialo? gue " Mr and Mrs Clacken," by Miss Sicely (of Marton) and Mr E, Phyn, was loudly applauded and encored, Mr Phyn danced the Highland Fling with great skill and spirit, and was recalled. An instrumental trio by Miss Wilhelms (Otto harp), Mr E. Wil helms (violin), and Mr Ernest Wilhelms (banjo), was splendidly given and was deservedly encored. The programme was brought to a close with the farce "Area Belle" Mr Cornish took the character of policeman " Pitcher," ; Mr Letford "Soldier Tosser," ; Mr W. Grice, "Milkman Chalks,"; Miss Rutherford, "Mrs Croker," the mistress; and Miss Phynn "Penelope" (Area Belle). The characters were acted to perfection and the whole performance was very creditable to those who took part, the continuous roars of laughter from the audience testifying to the excellence of the representations. Mr Benson, chairman of the school comni it tee, at the conclusion thanked those present for their attendance.
