Supposed "Long Firm" Gases.
[PEB PBBPS AS'OCIATIOK.I Auckland, Janaarj 1 9. Two Prussians, Joseph Miller and Fraud ' Smith, alias Shynni have beeu arrested on a charge of conspiracy to defraud three mercantile firms here. They are supposed to be a "long Ertn." A large quantity of goods have been recovered. Eighty sove- i reigns were found on one of the prisoners, also a ticket for a passatre by theTalune Thoy were remanded for a week at the Court to-day. Bail was refused. It was stated in the Court a third person accused had been arrested at Waitara * . , Nbw Pltmoi?th, January 19. At the Police Court to-day, a man named Smith, alias Miller, alias Jackson, was brought up on a charge of defrauding two well- known firms in Auckland, McArthur and Co. and Trentworth and Co. Inspector Thomson stated that the accused and two brothers arrived in Auckland from Russia with a limited capital. They managed to get credit for a large quantity of tfoode. After a time their creditors pressed for settlement, and in reply they said they had let the poods out to hawkers, who had not sent in all the money. Eventually the firms iuotituted enquiries, and found that accused had been perpetrating a swindle after the manner of the " long firm " swindle. Accused was remanded to Auckland for trial.
