New South Wales Politics.
A CLOSE DIVISION. [Per Press Association.] Sydney. I his Day. So little interest was taken in the debate on Mr Reed's hostile motion, that at 10 o'clock last night the Speaker's attention was called to the lack of a quorum. Mr Barton advocated the sinking of the fiscal question to enable m ambers on both sides to devote attention to necessary legislation, and the accomplishment of a national Australian policy. Mr Cook, leader of the Labor Party, said the action of Government had rendered it impossible for anj 7 man of sense to allow it to do legislative work of any kind, and the sooner members went to the country the better. At 2 o'clock this morning a division was taken, as both sides were anxious to decide the matter. Reed's amendment was negatived by one vote, the figures being 67 to 66. The House adjourned until Tuesday.
