The Matabele War.
« (FEB PBESS ASSOCIATION). Capktown, January 15. News has been received that the Bechuana police, supposed to have been slaughtered by the Matabele, are safe. The party despatched from Tati to recapture the Maxim guns left by Major Forbes' forces when compelled to retire before the Matabele, has returned after a fruitless journey. They report the bush to be swarming with natives. SAD FATE OF CAPTAIN WILSON'S COLUMN. DETAILS OF THE MASSACRE. BRAVERY OF THE BRITISH SOLDIERS. Capetown, January 16. The party under Captain Wilson bad reached King Lobengula's wagon, when the Matabele returned and assailed them. The natives had the advantage in numbers, and surrounded the detachment. The fight last for six hours when, the cartridges giving out, the firing ceased. The Matabele found many of the party who were mortally wounded writing farewell message* to their friends. Several of the wounded drew their revolvers, and made a, final but unsuccessful effort. The natives piled the bodies of the English in a heap.
