Fatal Accident at Awapuni.
A fatal case of drowning occurred at Awapuni yesterday afternoon, George Davey, 19 years of age, son of Mr Samuel Davey, of Kairanga, being the victim. It appears that the deceased, accompanied by his two brothers, Samuel aud William, proceeded to Awapuni Lake yesterday afternoon. The two first uamed stripped off and went for a bathe between the bridge and the boatahed, while the latter, who refused to join them as he could not swim, remained on the bank. Deceased, who was a poor swimmer, had not long been in the water when he commenced to sinlr, and called out to his brother. Samuel endeavoured to rescue him, and in the attempt to do so sank twice with his brother, when he had to let go his hold. A search was instituted for the body which was successful after about an hour's work, the body teing brought to the surface by Messrs G. Lyon and J. L.une. Messrs Baker and Carmody used every possible means to restore animation, but without avail. The unfortunate young fellow was recently working for Mr Forster-Pratt, and all who were acquainted with him speak of him as hard working and industrious. — Standard.
