A Shocking Accident.
The particulars of the death of the child of Mr J. P. Clark at Pahiatua on Saturday last are of a shocking character. It appears that Gordon Clark, four years of age, accompanied by his brother and other children, went into a paddock to play, and by some means or other the clothes of the former took fire from a burning log. The poor little fellow rushed frantically about the paddock until he fell exhausted in a smouldering heap. His brother, who is a year or two older; ran home and told his mother to bring some water as Gordon was on fire. The mother was quickly outside, but was horrified to find her baby boy lying in a shapeless mass near the house, almost every vestige of his clothing being burnt from his back. A neighbour heard the screams and went to the rescue. She endeavoured to remove what little clothing there was left, but in doing so the flesh itself peeled off the roasted body. The poor child, burnt beyond all recognition, was conveyed to the house of its mother, where it lingered for about half an hour.
