LARGE ESTATES.

♦ The Woodville Examiner complains that : " A large landowner in the district has bought up another large block of country formerly held by small settlers. This sort of thing is becoming a curse to the district, and it is time it was stopped by legislation j of the most stringent character. The I adding of field to field was condemned in the Biblical lore of ages ago, and it is just as great an evil of to-day. We shall hail with pleasure the most stringent legislation to stop this evil practice." We think the " creating of large estates " an evil, but at the same time we are of opinion the less legislation we have affecting private lands — for the next three years — the better for the colony as a whole. It would be cruel to prevent the owner of a small section of land selling it when he so desired.
