The Feilding Star. Published Daily. WEDNESDAY, JAN. 10, 1894. ARTESIAN WATER.
» We were very glad to loam from the speech made by the Mayor, Mr Carthew, on the occasion of his instal lati<>n, that during his terra of office he intended to make an effort to obtain a supply of artesian water for the Borough. Of course the ratepayers are all aware of the failure of the previous attempt to secure that object, and have pretty clear notions as to tho causes which led to it, therefore we do not think it either necessary or advisable to make any further reference to the subject. In other parts of this district, within a comparatively short distance of Feilding, where even the lay of the country does not appear so favorable, success has followed the efforts of those who have undertaken the work, and there can exist no tangible reason why we should not be equally favored. But, we warn the Council to have nothing whatever to do with any contractor who is not both willing and able to bring to the work machinery and tools suitable for its accomplishment, as well as skill in its direction. By adopting that precaution we feel assured that the ground would be fairly tested, and a plentiful supply of good water obtained. Unless this comparatively inexpensive plan be adopted we feel convinced that ultimately a more costly scheme will be forced on us. The population of the Borough is steadily increasing, and it is not too much to expect that it will be more than doubled in less than three years. This fact, which must be patent to every resident, should lead them to assist the Mayor and Council in their efforts to obtain for the town a plentiful supply of artesian water.
