John Holmes and Co. report under date December Ist, as follows : — Wool. — The fifth series of Colonial wool sales opened on Tuesday last the 28th ulto., with a large attendance representing both the Home and continental trade. Compared with the closing rates of last sales, prices all round show no quotable change, except wasty inferior greasy which is a shade m eaker. Competition generally is fairly active. The total available, after deducting 15,000 bales forwarded direct to consumers, and adding 34,000 bales held over from last series, will be 173,333 bales. The total quantity offered to date is 30,950 bales, of which 2138 bales, 6-91 per cent, have been bought in. Tallow — At to-days' public sales there was very little spirit in the biddings, and the bulk of the best qualities was bought in. Out of 1 208 casks offered, 573 casks sold at par to 3d per cwt. decline.

I Per Press Association.] London, January 7. The Butter Committee made no change in the price on Saturday. Tallow — Mutton, medium, 275; beef, 265. The English wheat market is changing a little for the worse; the Continental is changing a little for the better; and the American is tending upwards. Australian wheat on passage is quoted at 28s 6d ; buyers offer 6d less. For early shipments of the new crop sellers are asking 295 ; buyers quote 6d less.
