(PER PGKSS ASSOCIATION.) Sydney, January 7. The New South AVales swimming team left in the Mararoa to take part in the swimming-contests in Auckland. With respect to the fine imposed in Christchurch for the alleged wrongful landing at Lyttelton of trophies won by New Zealand cyclists in Australia, the Suburban Bicycle Club and the Darliughurst Harriers combined have subscribed the amount of the fine. In cycling circles here it is thought a pity such a graceful act should have come from local clubs, instead of from the New Zealand clubs interested in the matter. Melbourne, This Day. Further retrenchment has been decided on in the Education Department and a reduction is to be made in the uumber of inspectors and the clerical staff thus effecting a Having of .£4OOO per annum, Albany, This Day. Arrived— Oruba, from London. Passengers, for New Zealand, Messrs Neighre Ethelstou and Marks. Perth. This Day. A hurrican swept the Itoeburn and Cossack northern coasts, causing damage to the extent of £4000. The Church of England at Itoebum was wrecked and many other buildings were blown over. Seven inches of rain fell at Roeburn and three inches at Cossack. At the latter place a portion of seawall was washed away. ______^_ — __
