The Post says : — It is stated that some members of the Ministry are holding conferences of railway employes of " the right colour" in reference to the Commissioners. One such conference is said to have been held at Palmerston North by the Premier a short time back, while recently a meeting of railway employes was, it is alleged, held at Christchurch. This latter meeting was addressed by the Minister for Labour, who is said to have given his word to the railway men that two of the Commissioners — Messrs Maxwell aud Hannay — would be removed. After months of consideration the Ad \ roiralty haye discovered why it was that the Victoria was lost It had nothing to do with Sir George Tryon giviDg an im possible order on the Victoria, nothing to do with Admiral Markham trying to carry out this impossible order ou the Camperdown ; but, according to the wise men of Gotham, it was the fault of Captain Johnstone, in the Camperdown, for not being prompt enough. It is satisfactory to have a professional pronouncement on the catastrophe, otherwise the public might be disponed to blame the man in the moon, Monte Christo, or tbo President of the United States. At Svdo9y recently a novel point was decided by Mr Justice Stephen, in Chambers. A man named Snowdon became iudebted to be Borough Council of Newton, on tbe 26th June last, in the sum of £3 2s 6d for sanitary work. On the 17th October he became bankrupt, and on 31st of tbe same month he was summoned by the borough, and ordered to pay the amount due with costs. This order, how ever, he appealed against, mainly on tbe ground that ins bankruptcy was a bar to the oider against him His Honor held that the liability being one imposed by s'atute was not an ordinary debt, and was recoverable notwithstanding bankruptcy. The appeal was therefore dismissed. Apropos Of the discovery at Wangarei, in the Parahaki mountain, of gold-bear-ing quartz, some eighteen or twenty years ago a part}' of surveyors when in the same locality, collected some " likely looking stone " which they made up in a package, and gave to one of tlieir Maori servants to carry. They had a hard journey to make the Bay of Islands, but the Maori who carried the specimen proved himself equal to the occasion. After the first days tramp he threw away what he considered as only useless stones, and filled up his swag with kumeras. When near the end of the trip he replaced these with stones selected at hazard from the bed of a creek. Wlien this fraud was discovered the gentle savage utterly failed to understand the indignation of his Pakeha employers.
