The Feilding Star. Published Daily. THURSDAY, JANUARY 4, 1894. a suggestion.
Although Feilding has been fortunate for a long time in not requiring the services of the local Fire Brigade, yet we think something ought to be done in the direction of waking the members into new life. We are aware that there are members, with thoroughly competent officers in command, but we are also aware that practice has not been indulged in for a long time past. No doubt the reason of this is that as we have had a singular immunity from fires — or even alarms — the interest of the members has somewhat weakened, because the necessity for adding to their proficiency as firemen has not been kept very prominently before theni. It has been suggested that as the members of tbe Manchester Rifles are about to erect a drill hall, which will also be used as a gymnasium, in Stafford street, some effort should be made to obtain a proportion of the space in the proposed new building for the purposes of an engine shed. The Feilding Band committee of management have already made certain arrangements in that direction, and there can exist no reason why, under conditions to be arranged, the Fire Brigade should not do the same. The band, the brigade, and the volunteers could easily arrange to have separate nights for drill or practice, the gymnasium to be avail able at hours which did not interfere with any of the three institutions. By such a combination we feel assured that the interest would be kept up continually, and our Fire Brigade would largely benefit.
