Colyton School Treat.

«. The Colyton School treat was held on New Year's Day in grounds kindly lent for the occasion by Mr Neilson. The day was not quite as fine as it might have been, but yet all seemed to enjoy themselves. There was plenty of everything good—such as games of cricket and rounders ; dainty provisions and willing helpers and waiters ; and some truly handsome prizes. Mr Shortall superintended the sports and was ably assisted by several gentlemen of tbe committee. . The chairman, Mr Smith, distributed the prizes. The headmaster, Mr Friberg, explained that prizes were never giren for passing the standards, but for the work done to obtain tbis end. But, if the children did the work and the Inspector could not come to examine them, surely the prizes ought not to be withheld. After the children had received tbeir books Mr Friberg proposed a vote of thanks to all the many friends who had given such effective help to the school Cheers were then given for the headmaster, and Mr Neilson. Mr Bray then called for three cheers for Miss Shortall, and for Miss Mary Shortall the teacher. These two ladies richly deserved tbe hearty cheering wbich followed. A scramble for lollies and some more games followed, and the darkness ended a most enjoyable afternoon.
