The Floods in Hawke's Bay.
. (p*R PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Napikk, January 3. A largely attended meeting of country settlers was held to-day wben a strong committee was appointed to act in conjunction with tbe engineer in formulating a general scheme for the protection of the Aburiri flats from flooding. In response to a request by Captain Russell, the Postmaster- General has promised to instruct country postmasters and telegraphists to report tbe rise of rivers in the same way as weather warning, are given so that settlers in tbe plains below may move their etock ani hou-ehold goods wben floods are threatened. Captain Russell is now asking bim to have the warnings posted at oil Telegraph stations on the plaius as they might not be published soon enough in newspapers. Heavy rain set in this afternoon. The rivers are nearly bauk high, and are rising fuot Unless rain soon ceases tbe r e will be a renewal of the floods.
