The Chess Congress.
[Per Press Association] Dunedin, January 2. At the above to-day Pleasants opened with the Ruy Lopez against Le Leivre, and a good game eventually ended in a draw. .Mellor offered the Evans gambit to Barnes, who accepted. At the fifth move Barnes adopted the 884 defence. Mellor sacrificed several pawns to keep up the attack, and at the 13th move had lost a bishop and three pawns for his opponent's knight's roolc. A very interesting game followed to the 28th move, when Mellor made v miscalculation and resigned on the 30th move. Edwards adopted the Sicilian defence against Cleland, and in endeavouring to force matters he lost a second piece, but made such a stubborn defence that over 70 moves were made before he was mated. Hook ham opened with the Ruy Lopez against Brown. At the 2G th move he lost a queen for a rook and pawn, and after a hard fought game resigned on the 90 move. Barton played the Sicilian defence to Smith's move, and a very even game resulted to the 29th move when Barton gained a pawn, and pursuing the advantage queened a pawn on the •10th move. Smith resigned a few moves later. Mouat had a bye. In the Chess Congress Brown is leading with ok wins to 1 \ losses, but he has still to take a bye. Hook ham antl Cleland are second with 4A- to 2£ each.
