We regret to learn that the wife of Mr Bishop, of Campbelltown, died on Christ-i-ffcs day. The latest story regarding gooseberries is that a grower at Ashburton lias produced some measuring 4in in girth, and .looking like plums. After the election nome citizens of Oamaru (says the Truth) appeared on the stroets with black eyes, wbich wero I owing to tho " stings of bees " Latest returns for the Western Maori election show Ropata te Ao to be leading Pepene Eketone by 64 votes, with throe returns yet to come. A Salvationist places on record that he " was convinced he had full salvation because he had lived three months in a house with his mother-in-law and had not becomo a backslider." , A garden party will be held at Mr Gould's Clairville House, on New Year's day. All are invited to attend, and the proceeds will go to the Primitive Methodist Church fund. We have to acknowledge receipt of a very neat card from Lyon and Blair, of Wellington, wishing us the compliments of the season, which we desire cordially to return. The "Athletic Woman" is the latest social terror in Eugiand. She rides, shoots, swims, fights, and holds her own in smoking-room risky conversations. But she can't throw a stone yet. An election petition is to be lodged by Mr Jackson Palmer against the return of Mr Richard Monk, for Waitemata, the alleged ground being bribery and corruption. Tho girl L'zzie Price, who is in tbe Terrace Gaol on remaud on a charge of murdering her newly born child at Otaki, is still in a very weak state, and was not able to attend the adjourned inquest, whicii was to have been held yesterday. A son of Mr Short, living in Glasgow House, received a fracture of tho arm yesterday in a very simple manner. He was leaning over a rail, when it broke, and falling on his left arm it was broken. Di* Johnston was called in and reduced the fracture. An Adelaide telegram of the 24th reports that the steamer Touterden, from Melbourne to Adelaide, ran ashore on a reef near Macdonald Bay, and tbe prospects of floating her are reported not to be en couragmg. The smallest corporation in the world is that of the miniature city known as Seward City, Alaska, United States. Tliere are only three inhabitants, who are respectively Mayor, Chairman of the board of aldermen, and President of the common council. A young man named Fred Saxton, who was employed bushfelling at Pohangina, near the township, had his left arm broken recently by being struck with the limb of a falling tree. The sufferer was kindly driven in to Ashurst by Mr H. Woodham, and his injuries were attended to by Dr Locking. The points prize at the Feilding Sports resulted as follows; — A. W. Watts, 18 points; N.. Austin, 13 points; H. J. Cameron, IH points. Austin takes second prize by his win in the Sack Race and second in the Wheelbarrow Race, in addition to his places in the jumping events. A meeting of tlie Manawatu Rabbit Extermination Society was held at the Oroua Downs homestead last week, The balance sheet showed that since October 10th, 1892, the Society had paid for 10,258 skins at a cost of £254 8s lld. It was decided to offer one shilling for grown rabbits and sixpence for runners, and the usual rate of 2s for every 100 aores was agreed to. The following tenders were received by the Pohangina Road Board on Saturday:—For supply and delivery of 500 cubic yards metal on road leading to Apiti in Feilding Small Farm Block. — R. Lyon and Son, 2s 5-Jd per cubic yard, (accepted) ; McMillan and Cameron, 2s 9d per cubic yard ; J. and J. Shapleskie, 2s 6d per cubic yard, (informal.) School Committees in the Wanganui Educational district are notified that between the first and thirty-first of next month (January) nominations will be received for two persons qualified to fill the vacancies caused by the annual retirement of one-third of the Board members. Nominations must be forwarded to the Board's secretary, Mr A. A. Browne, on or before lst February, 1894. — Chronicle. Mr A. Sutherland, of Makino, while driving home from Feilding yesterday afternoon with his wife and family, had rather an unpleasant experience. When opposite Mr Knowles* residence one of the wheels parted company from the cart, and all the occupants were ejected on to the hard road. Fortunately none of them were hurt, in fact not so much as a scratch was to be found on anyone. Mr Percy Hausemann, who has been connected with many of the large travelling theatrical companies, and who had the management of " The Young Australian" company on their recent tour through New Zealand, will shortly visit Feilding with a panorama of ' Jerusalem ' and the " Zulu War," showing for two nights. On the second night the two sensational illusions " The Cocoon " and " The iErolitc " will be shown, combined with a first class variety of songs and dances. Statistics are said to show that young men do not, on the average, attain full physical maturity until they arrive at tbe age of twenty-eight years. Professor Scheiller, of Harvard, asserts, aa the result of his observations, that young men do not attain the full measure of their mental faculties before 2d years of age. A shrewd observer has said that " most men are bojs until they are thirty, and little boys until they are twenty _ye," and this accords with the standard of manhood, which was fixed at thirty, (among the ancient Hebrews and other races. The Taieri Advocate learns that the cheap suit swindle is being worked in the district. A canvasser, representing himself as a traveller for some well-known firm and armed with business cards and samples solicits an order for a suit ot clothes at about one-half the ordinary cost, and his persuasive eloquenoe succeed ing, duly takes the measure of his victim and secures a deposit of £1 or so as a guarantee. To give time to work the district an uuusual press of businees is put forward for a longer delay than usual in delivering. Tho canvasser goes on to his next victim, but the customer nerer receives bis suit of clothes. Archibald Wilson, droyer, well-known in tbis province, mot with his death at Hastings on Tuesday evening At 7 o'clock, while ho was walking along Here taunga road, lie suddenly fell upon bis back. He was picked up iv an uucon scious condition and carried into a shop and thence wus taken to Moroney's hotol where he was attended by Dr. Linney. The injured man never recovered consciousness, but diod at 9 o'clock fr6m compound fracture of the skull, the result of the fall. Deceased, who had a considerable sum of money upon him when he fell, had consulted Dr. Faulkner earlier in the day for heart disease. — Hawke's Bay Herald,
Captain Edwin wired at 12.55 p.m. today : — " Indications strong north to east and south-east winds and glass falling." Mr Seaforth McKenzie's tender for tbe erection of a house for Mr Charles Carr was accepted when tho tenders were opened to day. Mr Bray, the architect, informs us they were the best lot of tenders he had seen for some time. When Mrs Bastings was out for a drive yesterday, the vehicle collided with a dray on the Rangitikei line. It appears that the driver of the dray had no reins, so that, practically, his horses were under uo control whatever. Mrs Bastings was thrown out, and is now confined to her room although not seriously hurt. As Mr Robert Somerville was driving Mrs Bastings it may be accepted that the fault was not his.
