Mr Heydon, barrister, has accepted the Attorney-Generalship. He will be sworn in to-morrow and appointed to the Upper House. Mr Slattery will temporarily act as Minister of Justice. Mr Broad, solicitor, has been convicted of misappropriation of trust funds, and sentenced to five year*' imprisonment, and ordered to pay the sum of £500 to the defrauded party. This Day; The Government are sanguine that they will be able to pass the important measures whioh were checked by the prorogation when the House meets in January. Owing to the compulsory retirement under the Government retrenchment scheme there has been a severe strain on the Civil Service Superannuation Fund, and the Government have been appealed to to place the fund in a solvent condition. The income amounts to £6000 per month, while the expenditure reaches LBOOO per month. Melbourne, December 14. A Foil Court to-day. heard argument on the points reserved in the case of the woman Knorr, convicted of child-murder in connection with the recent baby farming, and dismissed them. This Day. A piece of paper has been picked up at Port Melbourne stating the ship Ontario, bound from Canton to Melbourne, has been lost off the Pbillippine Islands and the crew are making for Singapore in the vessel^ boats. A large punitive force is being despatched to Duck's river to capture or punish the natives who killed a number of black troopers lately. It is understood that after a few days the rates on the Queensland railway will be assimilated and the zone system introduced.
