New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company
A heavy shareholder in the company writes as follows : — " Nothing definite is yet known of the outcome of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile negotiations. It is rumoured Baron Schroder is less favourable than he was at first to the reconstruction, and that failing this, the unpaid capital will be fully called up. This would mean ruin to many shareholders. I think New Zealanders over here would have greater faith in the future of the company if Mr Thomas Kussell could, in the nicest, kindest manner, be persuaded to retire from all connection with it. His name appears to have had a singularly blighting effect on several enterprises, and we shareholders are scarcely pleased to hear it whispered he is working the wires very vigorously from Australia on the subject of the proposed reconstruction. I am informed that the long cable message explaining the entire scheme cost the liquidators £800.
