New Members of Parliament.
The following particulars regarding new members elected will be of interest: MB W. H. MONTGOMEBY (bLLESUBBB). Mr Montgomery, who has defeated the Hon W. Itolltslon, Leader of the Opposition, is a young man, a New Zealander. He was first educated at the Boy's High School in Christchurcb, and afterwards in England. He is a son of a Hon W. Montgomery, M.L.C., and has been managing his father's farm at Little Hirer. Mr Montgomery is a Ministerialist. The result of this election is, therefore, a great triumph for the Government. The new member has declared himself in favour of State aid to private schools. MR W. W. TAKNEB (AVON). The new member for Avon sat in the last Parliament, having been elected for the Heathcote seat at the 1890 general election on the Labour ticket. He was born at Moulton, near Northampton, in 1851, and was the son of an agricultural labourer. He came to New Zealand in 1879. Mr Tanner is a working shoemaker. He is a Liberal, and one of the most shrewd and energetic of the Labour Party. MB J. A. MILLAR (CHALMEBS). The new member for Chalmers acquired fame throughout New Zealand at the time of the great Btrike, when he was president of the Maritime Council of New Zealand, and was practically in charge of operations on behalf of the workmen. He is still president of the council, and is also secretary of the Dunedin Seamen's Union. Mr Millar has led a seafaring life, and was for .some years mate of a coasting vessel. He is a supporter of the Government, and will vote strongly in favor of the interests of labour. MB W. CROWTHER (AUCKLAND CITY). Mr Crowther, one of the three members returned for Auckland City, has been the architect of his own fortune. He was born in Lancashire, and apprenticed to Messrs Hibbert, Platt and Sons, iron* workers, of Oldham. He and several other apprentices left their employment rather than go to Russia to fit some machinery during the Crimean war, and Crowther landed in Melbourne in 1855, attracted by the Victorian gold rush. There he pursued various occupations ranging from digger to contractor, until in 1862 he arrived in Otago, and afterwards going to Auckland with shipments of horses, he started business there as stable proprietor. This business he carried on until he retired in 1891, and settled at Remuera. He has been a member of the Auckland City Council for fitteen or sixteen years, and his chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board. Mr Crowther, who is " a rough diamond," has been an active citizen of Auckland for years, and is generally respected there. He has been Mayor of that city for two years. MR R. MCNAB (MATAURA). Mr McNab, who has defeated the Hon. G. E. Richardson, was born near Invercargill, and is about 30 years of age. He is an M.A. of Otago University, and is by profession a lawyer, practising in Invercargill. _ He took a prominent part in the formation of the University classes, which have been so successful in that town. Mr McNab, who is possessed of considerable means, is an athlete— a fine sport, a good footballer, and a capital shot. His victory is another success for the Liberal cause. MR PIBANI (PALMERSTON), Mr Fred Pirani is a New Zealander, son of Mr Pirani, sub-editor of the Hawke's Bay Herald, and an old colonial journalist. The new member for Palmerston was brought up to the printing trade, and is the proprietor of the Mana« watu Standard. He has been a promin* ent Liberal for years, and opposed Messrs Stevens and Wilson at the last election. Mr Pirani is a member ot the Wellington Land Board, and has ably supported the interests of the small settlers.
