It contained an infernal machine, but the timely discovery of the nature of the contents prevented an explosion , President Carnot, on learning that the packages had been posted in France, urged the authorities to use their utmost endeavors to capture the authors of the plots. It has been ascertained that if the infernal machines sent to the Emperor and Count Caprivi had exploded, tbey would have caused a fearful havoc.
