• The prize firing competition of the members of the Manchester Eifles started yesterday, when 21 members, of different classes, took part and some fair scores were made. Volunteer Scott was the highest scorer in A class, with a total of 82, Saywell Brothers being next with 73 each. Volunteer McMurray was top in B class with 73, and Volunteer Parkes the best in C class with 59. Class A was well represented, but B and C classes had a very poor muster. The following are the highest scores of each class : —
The new targots for the Martini-Henry class were completed yesterday and were found to answer very well. A deep trench has been cut in the side of the hill, in which the targets, of which there are one for short ranges and a larger one for 500 yards range and upwards, are suspended to n wooden structure on a centre pin. After each hit, the target is swung round, the upper half— a complete target— taking the place of the lower, and vice versa. Lieutenant Charles Bray superintended the engineering, and the work was done by Volunteers Thomas Evans and his son John. Volunteer Parker made the frames, etc., and Volunteers Saywell the ironwork, the whole being completed in a workmanlike manner. Captain Kirton and Lieutenant Bray fired the first shots to " open the ball." Volunteer Scott scored 82 at the 300 yards range, making five bull's eyes in succession. Altogether the shooting was very creditable.
