(Joodbehere, asking him to stand for election as Mayor ot the Borough, for a second term. In London a man has been sentenced to seven year's penal servitude for marrying women in order to possess himself ot their saving!. At the time of bis arrest he had just advertised for a wife, and received no fewer than 150 letters in reply " Thit is an age," says Mr Worth, one of the Wellington candidates, " in which human nature hti to assert itself more than any age I have lired in yet." Well we (Truth) always suspected Worth of being a pre-Adamite fossil. Miss Dealy, one of the sufferers by tho railway accident at Awapuni recently, is not yet out of danger, being still in a semNconscioui state. We understand that Mr Trask is entering an action against the Railway Commissioners in connection with the accident. — Standard The Scotland Daily News thinks Mr. Evison's, (one of the candidates for Christ, church) suggestion, that the Labor Department should forward daily reports as to the state of the Labor markets in all parts of the colonies to the newspapers, is practical, and one likely to result in much benefit to the workers. At the triennial election for members of the Rangitikei County Council held last Saturday the following was the reBult :— Eangitoto Riding, C. W. MoLean ; Porewa Biding, B. E. Improvements are being made to the footpath in Manchester street past the new shops lately built by Mr Hamilton and others, To make a good job of it the footway should be extended as far as Kimbolton road, the same as has been done on the opposite side of the street. It would be a convenience, and give the Square a more uniform appearance. A noticeable feature in the cricket match, Halcombe v. Feilding, (played on Saturday last) and one which drew forth expressions of admiration from the on' lookers, was the smart fielding and quick delivery of the Halcouibe men. On the other hand, the inferior display of the local men while in the field was very marked ; they appeared to lack sufficient energy, and allowed too many chances to slip by them, " butter-fingers " being often heard amongst by-standers. The winning or losing of a game depends equally as much, if not more, on the fielding as on batting or bowling, 60 it is to be hoped that our men will attend more to the former, or their chauces for the cup will be very poor.

Cricketers are reminded of the practice to-morrow afternoon. Mr S. Goodbehere's letter in reply to Mr Wilks will appear to morrow. " I am here, gentlemen," exclaimed the pickpocket to his fellow prisoners, "as a result of a moment of abstraction." " And ll," faid the incendiary, "because of an unfortunate habit of making light of things." "And I," chimed in the forger, " on account of a simple desire to make a name for myself." "And I," added the burglar, " through nothing but taking advantage of an opening which offered in a large mercantile establishment in town." But here the warder separated them. About 150 yards from the township there is a very ugly hole, and last week a dray loaded with wool, and a buggy were upset in trying to navigate it. When some serious accident lias taken place and the Kiwitea Road Board gets mulcted in damages, perhaps then they may see thoir way clear to put tho road to rights.
