The Feilding Star. Published Daily. TUESDAY, NOV. 14, 1893. THE GENERAL ELECTION.
The fiat has gone forth, and the general election will take place on Tuesday, the 28th instant. It was not expected that this importaut event would be arranged for until a week later, but it would appear that the Government have serious cause to believe that unless they go to the poll at once their chauces of being returned with a working majority would be much reduced, flenco this somewhat unseemly haste. It is also a fact that many candidates who have arranged to address the electors in the scattered centres of the country districts will not now be able to do co ; while a large number of the electors —those settlers in the back districts who are the most deeply interested — will be deprived of their hoped for opportunities of hearing the expressions of the political views of a number of candidates. One compensating advantage they certainly have, which is— that so far as was practicable the main speeches of the candidates have been very fully reported by the press. The one thing needed now is increased activity on the part of the members of the central and branch election committees. Still, we contend that pushing on the elections so rapidly is an injustice of a serious nature to the country electorates.
