The Feilding Masonic Lodge will meet on Monday next, the 20th instant. In the new electoral roll one woman hap given her occupation as " caretaker of twins." The Pohangina Small Farm Associalton No 2 will meet in tho Pohangina schoolhouse on Saturday next at 2 p.m. The supplementary roll for Rangitikei is to hand. The total of electors amounts to 4869, Tho old roll had only 3674. Mi Ellery Gilbert, piano tuner, will visit Feilding on Wednesday next and will remain in tho district for some weeks. Shearing is now in full swing at Apiti. The increase of lambs will be something over one hundred per cent. The contractor, Mr McMillan, has completed the work of making the main road into the block. Woman's Franchise ? A woman with a rather squeaky voice distinguished herself at Mr Macdonald's meeting in Wellington, last Friday ovoning, by frequently interrupting the candidate, and had at length to be removed. Several now buildings are being put up in the Pohangina township, and the settlement presents a thriving appearance. The great drawback is the want of roads, all vehicular traffic haying to take the nver track from Palmer's store. The architect of the Wanganui Education Board, Mr Atkins, F.R.1.8.A., m» vites tenders for the erection of schools at Nikau and Taikorai. Plans and specifications to be seen at Mr Sherwill's office Feilding, and Barraud and Abraham's Palmerston North. One of -tho largest paper mills in the United Kingdom closed its doors on October 9th, owing to the lack of coal. Many other mills will follow suit. This will lead to a paper famine in the newspaper world as the stocks are being quickly exhausted. Mr Pearson, the well known bootmaker, of Fergusson street, has just received an extensive consignment of new boots and shoes of all descriptions, and they must be sold at once to make room for Christmas stocks. The prices are surprisingly low and as the goods are of full value, a speedy visit should be made to Mr Pear* Bon's establishment It has been stated that the old Delphic oracles were not always accurate, nor can the modern clairvoyant claim perfection in his or her attempt to unfold the mysterious future. A lady clairvoyant in a recent performance in a town in this district was asked to name the winner of the Melbourne Cup. The " medium " promptly answered—" Cremorne " ! Just co ! Out of a field of 30 horses, Cremorne finished absolutely last ! At the Manawatu and West Coast A. and P. Show on Thursday last, over six hundred visitors partook of luncheon at the " Cafe de Paris," opposite the Palmerston Railway station, and everyone was well pleased with the excellence of the viands and of the attendance. Mr Black, the energetic and courteous proprietor, has an advertisement in our issue of to*day, to which we direct the notice of tho travelling public. There were five applications on Saturday last for the position of Engineer and Clerk to the Pohangina Road Board, Mr E, Goodbehere having resigned the position of Secretary, owing to the removal of the Board's office to tbe Pohangina township. They were, at per annum ;— T. Bastings (Palmerston), £165 C. A. Mountfort (Feilding), £250; E. J. Armstrong and W. H. Flyger (Palmerston), £250; C. Bray (junr)., £250; H. J. Hayns, £208. Mr Hayns, who was Engineer to the Board last year, was unanimously appointed on a ballot being taken, Mr B. F. Haybittle was unfortunate in having his fine draught maro " Kitty " injured on Saturday night. It would ap pear that while running in the paddock the mare must have trodden on a stab, which broke and flew up, and the animal suddenly moving forward became severely staked, a piece of tbe timber penetrating into the bowels to a depth of fourteen inches. Mr James Norman was sent for, and on arrival he quickly extricated the piece of wood— which, fortunately, had mißsod all vital parts— and stitched the wound up, Mr Haybittle is doubtful as to the result of the accident yet, but is afraid he will be unable to work tbe mare again. Speaking of the Payne Family who appear here on Thursday next, the Na» tional Advocate, of Bathurst, says : — "One of the very best entertainments given in Bathurst for a long time past was that at the School of Arts Hall last evening, when the Payne Family, who hayo established themselves favourites wherever they have performed, appeared to a very large audience, the hall being well filled in eyery part. The character of tho entertainment is well kpown to our readers and therefore it is needless to say much about it, further than to remark that every item on the programme was rendered in really excellent style, and that those present were so delighted that in several numbers encores wero demanded, but owing to the lengthy programme, uot responded to.
It is currently rumoured among investors that Wni. Woldorf Astor is about to build in London the largest and most costly hotel in the world, expending LI ,700,000. The following tenders were received by Wardens Lucas and Browne, and the Engineer, on October 26th, for thirty-five chainß of drain and five bridges in the Pohangiua township:— E. F. Charles, £91 10s (accepted) ; J. H. Anderson, £50 ; timber and nails, 17s 6d per 100; O. Thompson, £103 15s ; J O'Connor, £134 ss ; F O'Leary and Patrick Healey, £138 10s ; R Lyon and Son, £160 ; A Nathan, £162 ss. _____ mmmm
