Pohangina Notes
[FBOJI OtJB OWN COBBBSPONDBNT.] I have been travelling about a good deal lately, and have observed a large amount of improvement going on in the different parts. In fact, the face of the country is being rapidly changed by the progress of settlement, Tho creamery has been erected on a portion of the property of Mr Hopkins, adjoining the School Reserve. The site is well chosen. Pipes have been driven, and a plentiful supply of clear cold water obtained. I expect the factory will be in full g wring in about a week. The sooner the better, because the settlers interested are getting anxious as they have a great number of cows coming on. In that connection I see Mr Hopkins has put up a substantial stockyard within convenient distance of the creamery, to which is attached a breaking-in race for young heifers. The race is opened with a gate, which, when open, acts as a wing to the race, At the Bide of the bail is another gate which lets the cows into the paddock, after they are milked. There will be no roping. Once in the race the heifers cannot go out until they have been milked. There is no possible chance of the animal knocking herself about. The race was tried on Sunday last with a heifer, and the results gave great satisfaction. I hear that Mr Durling, who is a well-known and highly esteemed settler up this way, has undertaken the management of the cows, and as he is an experienced hand among stock lam satisfied he will do all that can be expected of him, and that means a good deal in his case. There is abundance of grass and all classes of stock are looking remarkably well. New buildings oontinue to be erected in the township, and, among other tradesmen, a blacksmith has put up a forge, and is doing a fair amount of work. Election matters are quiet
