Yesterday afternoon, just after the 5.30 train from Palmerston had left Terrace End, a horse attached to a trap in which there was only the driver, bolted owing to being alarmed by tbe train, For a few hundred yards it galloped along the road towards Ashurst, the driver making frantic efforts to regain control, but without effect, ultimately tbe horse ran clear ot the vehicle, which rolled oyer, distributing the " man and material " on the road. Fortunately nothing was damaged but the trap. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Mountaineers' Lodge U A.O,D.,was held in the Lodgeroom, Birmingham, on the evening of Tuesday last. About twentyfour members were present, The formal biifiii)esß of the meeting was got through satisfactorily, one new member was initiated and eight candidates were proposed for initiation, A pleaaaut evening was spent, aongs and recitations being given by the members. After tho close of the Lodgea meeting of the Anniversary Sports Committee was held in connection with the Druids. The sports take place on the 18th of January next, when a successful gathering is anticipated. The train arrangements yesterday were all that could be desired, the only complaints we have heard, were to the effect that a railway timetable, intelligible to the ordinary travelling public was not adyer. tised, By this omi6sion we know of several families who did not travel. The crush at the ticket window of the Feilding station for the first train was yeiy great, in fact the station master had to refuse to issue tickets some minutes before the train wan started, and therefore many had to wait for tbe 10.53 train. This inconvenience would have been avoided if the people had not pressed iv so much, and secondly had a barrier been erected, as in other places, so that when a person obtained his ticket he could get away from the window, with, out having to use actual violence to get through the crush behind. The railway officials did their work well; and the , trains were despatched with very creditable punctuality. A serious acoident happened near Awa. puni at midday yesterday, owing to the special train from Wellington running 1 into a trap driven by Mr J. Davis, and containing Mrs Trask and children and a young girl named Ellen Dealey. It apI pears that the driver was crossing the line ; at a point where there is a bend shaded with trees, which obscures the approachiug train from view. When Mr Dayis noticed the special it was almost upon him, and be had no time to get clear. The conveyance was therefore run into, the cowcatcher on the engine throwing tho trap, horse and occupants out, but fortunately clear of the line. The vehicle was smashed to pieces but the horse escaped scot free, Miss Dealey sustained concus* sion of the brain and had her jaw injured. Of the others the driver and one of the children were only slightly hurt. Under the circumstances it is wonderful that the accident did not turn out more seriously.
Captain Edwin wired to-day '.—lndications for strong north east to north and west winds after 16 hours from now, with rain. Owing to pressure on our space to*day, we are compelled to hold over letters to the editor, Pohangina notes, and notes by our travelling correspondent. Mr Ashworth's cheese factory at Makino is now in fall working order. He is using the building of the defunct Makino Cheese and Butter Company, The Feilding people mustered in force at the Palmerston Show yesterday, over six hundred tickets were issued at the railway station, and it is estimated that double that number of persons either rode or drove. A little girl named Eose McColl narrowly escaped meeting with a very serious if not fatal, injury, on the A. and P. Showgrounds yesterday afternoon. She was caught in a Massey-Harris reaper and binder, which was at work on the ground, and her clothes were torn from her body, but she was fortunately rescued before her body was attacked, a few slight cuts being the extent of her injuries;
