Launceston was not the slightest assistance to Loyalty towards the finish of a mile and half gallop. Competent judges describe tbe start for the Maribyrnong Plate on Saturday as the worst on record. Canioola has recovered his position in the betting, being well backed down to 100 to 10 ; Loyalty is very firm at 100 to 11 ; Tim Swiveller 100 to 9 ; Carnage 100 to 8 ; Sterachaser was well backed at 100 to 3. Vakeel, Newman, Sainfoin, and Oxide are heavily backed; 4000 to 40 was taken about Pounamu. Loyalty, Newman, Portsea, Carnage, or The Sailor Prince should prove the winner.
