The Premier at Ohingaiti
THE OFFER OF A BRIBE DENIED. (PEB PBEES ASSOCIATION.) M.ABTON, This Day. The Premier addressed a meeting at Ohingaiti on Saturday evening when about 300, mostly co-operatives, were present. In the main lines the speech was very similar to those delivered at other places. He commented very strongly on the split in the Liberal camp owing to the candidature of Messrs Stevens and Iyess, and advised the latter that he should withdraw. At the close of fhe address Mr Ivess mounted the platform and nwie a very mildlyworded protest against the interferance of the Premier. He then proceeded to explain that. A. B. Mack ay, Engineer to the County Council, was the person who said that L'2so would be forthcoming if he would consent to withdraw his candidature. He also stated that Mr Floyd, Chairman of the Liberal Association, approached him with the same object. The latter accusation caused a scene. Mr Floyd, who was in the hall, advanced threateningly to tho platform, but the Premier interposed, and Mr Floyd having waited until Mr Ivess concluded gave a denial to Mr Iyess' statement. The meeting concluded with a vote of thanks to the Premier and confidence in the Government ; the Premier undertaking to see Mr Ivess and endeayoar to discuss the matter with him, Mr Mac* kay, in a letter to the Mai ton Advocate to-day, denies he ever mentioned the matter of a bribe to Mr Ivess.
