A Valuable Property

In a very readable article on the Makerua Swamp, now being drained by the Wellington»Manawatu Bailway Com* pany, the Manawatu Farmer says of the nature of the lnnd : — "A fair sample of the land that will be open for cultivation by the draining of this swamp can be seen where the cutting is made. A layer of rich black soil, some three feet deep, covers the top, while the lower strata is fine loose clay. Along the banks of the Tdkomaru river the land, when cleared, will be suitable for farm homesteads, and it is expected that in fire or six years fields of wheat, or other grain, will cover the spot now comparatively useless. The river, when cleaned, will form a natural dram, as it is evident that the blocking of the channel was the original cause of the swamp. The Company is pushing on the work as rapidly as possible, in order to throw the reclaimed land upon the market, and as every day application is made for sections along the line, no doubt (he sale of such rich agricultural country will, over and over again, repay (he expense incurred. The magnificent tract of level country laid open by the draining of the Makerua and Tokomaru sn-amps must before long attract the at* tention of the class of men wanted — experienced farmers, men who know good land when they see it, and know what to do with it when they get it. With such men, on such land, there will be no part of the North Island so richly productive in dairy or cereal produce as the plain that lies between the towns of Pal* raerston and Shannon.
