Wanganui Education Board
The usual monthly meeting of the j Education Board commenced on Monday. Present— Messrs Notman (chairman), Sanson, Bridge, Fry, Carson, Baker, Beckett, and Rev John Ross. The following appointments were dealt with in committee :— Halcombe— From Miss Adn Qunrrie, resigning as from the the 20th November; resignation accepted with regret. Colyton — Miss Jane Fraser was ap pointed cadet. Halcombe — It was resolved that Miss Annie Scott be transferred from Bulls to Halcombe to replace Miss Ada Quarrie, resigned, and that Miss Mary Volt/., of Bunnythorpe, be appointed pupil teacher at Bulls. It was resolved that an application be made to the Government for payment of the September quarter on the June returns in consequence of the attendance having been reduced bj the epidemic of measlesThe Board resumed on Tuesday morning, when the following business was transacted : — Pohangina, — A letter was read stating that a meeting had been held and a Committee appointed for the Awahau district, and asking for information as to where the school site was to be, as they desired to go on with the clearing. A letter was also read from Mr Warren, stating the mod its opt ratal i for the taking of a site. Another letter of a later date was read from Mr Warren stating that the lessee of one of the sections had agreed to an I exchange ot certain sections without compensation. A communication was read from Mr Port, the lessee, notifying his willingness to agree to the exchange —After a little discussion the exchange as proposed was agreed to. A letter asking for furniture for aided school, and stating that a teacher had been appointed, was was referred to the Executive. An application for the lease of section 51, Block XV., for 15 years ; resolved that the applicant be informed that the Board are exchanging the section in question for another site. Wftitapu West. — A request for the erection of a Rchoolhouse in the township, signed by some 30 residents of the district, was read. Mr Fry reported that he had visited the district. There was a school reserve in the township, and some 41 children in all to be provided for. He recommended that the necessary steps be taken for the formation of the district. Carnarvon — Letter enclosing resolution to the effect that the Committee respectfully request the Board, when forming the Taikorea School District, not to enclose certain sections, the occupiers of which desired to remain in the Carnarvon district ; resolved to forward the proposed boundaries to the Committee, and request them to send back suggested alterations. Waituna Aided School. —Mr Fry reported on the above school, which he had visited since the last meeting of the Board. He had found twen'y one children present on the occasion of his visit. Tne report dealt with general matters conccroing the school, and recommended the payment of the usual capitation allowance — The Chairman explained thai the main points in the mttter was the application for capitation and information at to whether the Committee could refuse to admit children coming from a distance. — Mr Sanson said that aided schools, even if carried on in a private hou«e, must be accessible to any children who desired to attend. — After discussion it w»s resolved that the Secretary be auththorised to pay the capitation allowance to the Wai'.una Committee in accordance with the regulations. BeaconsuYld. — From llie Committee, asking why the Inspector's returns and examination papers bad been sent direct to the teacher instead of through the Committee. — Resolved, That the Commit* tee be informed that the action was quite in keeping with the amended regulations', and that although they could be inspected at the school they could not be taken away,
