- » [from oub own cobbesfondent.] The members of the Excelsior Lodge, I 0.G.T., held a very successful meeting on Thursday eveningjast. The items on the syllabus for the night were the election of officers and " brothers' surprise." The election had jest commenced when fifteen members of the Saodon Lodge made their appearance making a total of about fifty members present. The election of officers was postponed until next meeting. The visiting members rendered some Tery nice instrumental and rocal music after which the " surprise " was given, which consisted of a variety of choice fruit which had been procured from Palmerston. Full justice was done to the viands by the members, all enjoying themselves to their hearts' content. The Lodge was closed in the usual manner. • Now tfcat the fine weather has arrived the crops are nearly all in the ground, and those which were sown early are looking better than they hare done at this time of the year for two or three seasons past. Wheat is Tery scarce, oats being chiefly sown owing to the reason being so far advanoed before sowing could commence. Shearing is now in full swing and good clips are anticipated. Mr S. rotter, Jubilee lecturer for the Primitive Methodist Connexion, intends visiting here t6*morrow evening and giving a lecture accompanied with stereo* ptical views of early scenes in N.Z. The chief subject will be the Rev Mr Ward, the first Primitive Methodist preacher in New Zealand, The Maori band from Wanganui, accompanied by Staff«Captain Holdaway, will give a selection of musical items in the Temperance Hall on Friday night. Nga Biroriro. who is well noted for his musical skill, is to be present. ■
