He appealed to women not to follow men in allowing religious in* structinn to be banished front day schools and said he thought tbe time had arrived when the Synod should formulate a policy on this matter. He referred to the success of Selwyn College and the students and the vatuable library they were getting together. The directors of tbe National Insurance Company propose to pay a dividend at the rate of 12^ per cent for the halfa year absorbing L6L27Gs lOd and a bonus of 2-J- per cent making a total of 15 per cent for the yoar, and to carry forward L14.860 3s. At the annual meeting of tbe congrega* tion of First Church, a motion was passed in appreciation of the services of the Rev Mr Gibb, pastor, and the Rev Mr Saunders in drawing attention to prevalent evilsWeilingtok, October 30. The Mariposa, with the English mails of 7th inst., left San Francisco for Auckland on the 20th, one day late. The Monowai, with the Colonial mails of 7th inst., arrived at San Francisco from Auckland on 27th, one day late At the half»y early meeting of the Bank of New South Wales, held in Sydney today, a dividend at the rate of 12.V per cent, for the jenr was declared and the sum of £20,8(54 carried forward. The fund raised for the relief of the Haillie family, the victims of the recent boating fatality, is attaining very .respectable dimeos/ous. Already about LloO has been collected in Auckland. An unusH&l case of assault came before the Police Court this morning. The defendant, a man named James Wnnder, struck two men in the passage of an hotel with a sling shot. In answer to the Bench, the prisoner said he had carried a s] ing-shot all through the strike in Australia without having used it. The Justices sentenced the man to one month's imprisonment with hard labour on each charge, the sentences to run concurrently. The funeral of Professor Pond took place to-day. There was a large attendnnce of friends and public men, besides numerous educationalists. Bishop Cowie, Sir 3- M, O'Korke, and the professors were amongst those presunt.
