His liabilities are stated to be £'274,000, and the assets are estimated to produce t'19,000. The Hon Frederick Howard, brother of the Earl of Effingham, has committed suicide by shooting himself. Reports arc current that Dr Nan ten's expedition has been lost in the K<ira Sea. The Pall Mall Gazette, in a series of articles, has exposed the Harness Elec* fricnl Institute as a quackery. Harness hns resigned the management and an official receiver has been appointed. The second series of wool sales opens on Febraary 27th. Alt the arrivals up to date will be included. It is reported that Scott, the supposed engineer, and the missing witness in the Ardlainont murder case has been discovered and that he has been identified as a London bookmaker. Hong Kong, October 26 Iho Superior Court of Shanghai has reversed the decision of the Japanese Court in the case in which the P. and O. Company claimed damages in connection wi h a collision between their steamer Ravenna, and the Japanese despatch boat Christina in November last, and has allowed the Company costs. The decision of tlio Jnpuncse Court was against the Company. Nbw York, October 27. The general opinion in business circles in New York and Washington is that the Stntes ought to encourage the laying of a cable between California, Hawaii, and Japan. Washington, October 27. The United States Government bare apologised to the Braziliau Government for tlm netii n |of Admiral Stanton in diluting a flag of the insurgent leader, Mill. . Berlin. October 27. The Bank of Cassel (n town in Prussia) has tailed. The liabilities of the institution amount to four million marks.
