Melbourne's Loss of Trade
» The Melbourne Argus says : — The return of the imports and exports of the colony for the quarter ended on the 30th September has been issued bj the statists cal branch of the Customs Department. For the moo months of the year the exports are valued at .£7,600,000, and the imports at £9,000,000. These sums do not compaie favorably, even allowing for the present incomplete year, with the value of the exports atsd imports of last year, which wera respectively £14,000,000 and £ 1 7,000,000. Tbe customs authorities consider the returns show that we are losing our river trade and intercolonial trade. Generally, Melbourne was the great cen* tre foi distribution of foreign products throughout Australia, but it is fast losing tbe trade. Our own products also are beiug more shut out by the Protection tariff of the other colonies.
