Ati extraordinary gazette, issued to-day, notifies the appointment of Sir James Prendergnst, Chief Justice, as Deputy Governor during the temporary absence of the Earl of Glasgow, from the colony. Donedin, October 20. Nearly 40 parents appeared at the Police Court to-day to answer charges under the truancy clauses of the Education Act. la nearly erery caie a plea of illness was put forth but no certificate of exemption was produced- In most cases the Bench made an order and pointed out that if it was disobeyed the parents were liable to pay £2 per week. Jno. McLeod, farmer, of Waikouaih, died to-day from injuries due to a kick in the stomach from a horse. Deceased was 50 years of age, and leaves a wife but no family. Auckland, October 20. The girl Flora Nicholson, 15 years of age, who is charged with attempting to commit suicide by swallowing a solution of match heads, pleaded guilty when brought before the Court to-day. She was admonished by the Bench and discharged. Timaru, October 20. It is reported that a sea-serpent has been seen a few miles south of Timaru within the past fortnight by the officers of a passing steamer. It lifted a serpentlike head 14 ft above the water.
