The Unemployed Difficulty
(PER PBESS ABBOCIATIOK.I. Chbistchubch. October 17. At the invitation of the Mayor, Mr Eden George, another meeting of unemployed was held this afternoon. About three hundred men were present. A large number appeared to have been attracted by curiosity. Mr Powell reported having seen the Hon. Mr Beeves and presented resolutions passed the previous day. The Minister had expressed his willingness to receive a deputation of genuine unem* ployed. After Mr George had made an attack upon the Lyttelton Times and Mr Beeves, Mr Whiting moved, "That Mr Reeves be asked to come down and meet the unemployed at Tuamstreet Hall at 2 80 p.m. to-morrow, and also to meet Mr George on the platform. " 'In speaking to the resolution, which wm earned, Mr George said that if Beeves did not accept the invitation he should brand him as a coward. A deputation waited on Mr Beeves in the afternoon and asked him to meet all the unemployed at the Land Board Office to-morrow. The Minister promised to be present. Dcnbmn, October 17. Since the Ist of June the names, of 420 men have been entered on the books of the local Labour Bureau, and it isesti* mated 150 of these are at present out of work. At the request of some of the latter, Mr Fish, M.H.B , telegraphed to the Premier, hoping that the married here would be given work before the men who were sent down from Christchurch.
